A quiet game about a very small animal

Bramble Row

A Hedgehog's Autumn

You were born too late in the year. The nights are drawing in, the ground is getting cold, and you weigh nowhere near enough to sleep through the winter. You have until the first frost. Everything you need is somewhere in these gardens, and nobody is going to show you where.

What you are doing

Leave the nest under the shed each night. Eat beetles, slugs and worms. Learn the garden. Get back before the birds start singing.

You are not collecting anything. You are putting on weight. Every gram counts, and the number that matters is 500.

Staying safe

There is no health, and there is no fighting. Being caught out at sunrise costs you weight and a bad day's sleep, nothing more. Running out of energy leaves you crawling until you can find somewhere to rest.

You are nearly blind. Your nose is the thing to trust. Sniffing reveals what is nearby, but only roughly, and rain washes the scent out of the air.

Getting better at it

You do not spend points. Instincts arrive on their own, while you sleep, because of what you actually did: eat enough worms and you start to sense them in wet ground. Sleep in enough odd corners and you learn to make any of them comfortable.

Walk into pots, buckets and tins to shove them over. Some need a run-up. Press Space at a log or a loose slab to look underneath. On the map, amber is food, pale blue is worth a look, and warm orange is home.

Hold C to stand still and listen. You will hear things you cannot see, and a ring shows you roughly which way they are. Take leaves from a drift back to the nest to build it up.

Press Tab for the journal. It fills itself in as you go, and it never tells you what you have not found yet.

Saving

Everything saves by itself, in this browser, at the end of every night and whenever you find something. There is nothing to press. Clearing your browser data will clear your hedgehog too.

Build 1 of 5. One garden, five foods, no predators yet.
Hedgehogs are in serious decline in Britain. A 13cm gap in your fence, a ramp in your pond and no slug pellets genuinely help.

The Garden kept by Nubbin

Everything has gone very still

The garden is waiting. So is the frost, but it is being polite about it.
